Yoga and Stress Reduction Workshop

Yoga and Stress Reduction Workshop

Yoga & Stress Reduction:

Stress has become a prevalent term in our society, be it in you own life, or in a partners, a friends, as a society we have all experienced some form of stress. However, measurement of stress can be difficult, as people experience situations in different ways. Stress can be describes as a mis-match between demands & pressures and the ability to cope with them. Throughout our lives we encounter potentially stressful situations, this is a fact of life, but how we approach and deal with a situation determines how stressful the situation becomes. An Irish study of 5,000 people suggested that over 25% of the surveyed workforce always or often found their work stressful, whilst 31% of the participants surveyed frequentley came home from work exhausted.

When we feel stressed a physological reaction takes place in our body, our stress response kicks in and activates the sympathetic nervous system. Our body floods with hormones such as cortisol and norepinephrine, our senses sharpen, whilst our heart beat and blood pressure increases to prepare our body for the impending emergency. But the problem is your body doesnt know the difference between being stuck in a traffic jam or being chased by a tiger, its the same response. So when we spend a lot of time in the sympathetic nervous system mode, or being chased by a tiger our body becomes exhausted, our sleep & digestive patterns become disturbed, and our bodies natural defenses drop.

DRU yoga research found that “yoga is significantly effective for improving wellbeing and resilience to stress”. So you might now be asking, why this is, and how do you do it, well here are five steps to promote your well being and reduce stress:

1. Do yoga!! Yoga activates the parasympathetic nervous system, which enables the body to relax and begin to restore itself.

2. Energy block release sequences (exclusive to DRU yoga) and postures strenghten muscles and release blocked energy from the body. Releasing stagnant energy in our body enables us to enjoy increased energy levels, whilst strengthened muscles promotes stamina and endurance.

3. Breathing or Pranayama practices, can activate the relaxation response, whilst also increasing improvement in breathing.

4. Meditation, no don’t think of a zen master or a crossed legged person sitting on the floor, think of practical things, like driving, eating chocolate, chopping vegetables. Meditation is about focusing the mind and being present in the moment, and when we are stressed we are often worrying about something outside of this very moment, something from the past or the future.

5. Commitmiting to your wellbeing. Actually making the time in your schedule to comit to your wellbeing empowers you to take control and apply the above steps in managing your stress levels.

During our upcoming yoga workshop we will learn and explore a selection of energy block release sequences, yoga postures and breathing techniques to release tension & stress. Followed with a deep relaxation to relax, restore and revitalise your body and mind.
