Essential oils for stress

Essential oils for Stress

Claire Kenny 22/11/18

Essential oils contain a highly concentrated form of the biologically active compounds found in flowers and plants. Because they’re concentrated, they can provide therapeutic benefits—including stress relief—in very small amounts. Many of these oils have been used for therapeutic purposes for nearly 6,000 years by the ancient Chinese, Indians, Egyptians, Greeks, Romans and others.

Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils to balance, harmonize and promote the health of body, mind and spirit. There are many ways to enjoy aromatherapy. Inhalation is the quickest. Just open the bottle and take a sniff. There are also various types of diffusers, which use heat, evaporation and other means to circulate the goodness of essential oils into the air you breathe.

Adding a few drops of an essential oil to your bathwater will deliver benefits though your nose and skin at the same time, you can also add them to a diffusers to disperse the scents around your house or car. Essential oils should not be rubbed directly into the skin, try diluting your favourite scent with what’s known as a carrier oil, such as olive oil or coconut oil.

Here are three essential oils that are especially recommended for stress relief:

Lavender

One of the most common essential oils, lavender oil has a calming, relaxing effect. It’s considered a nervous-system restorative and helps promote inner peace and restful sleep while relieving restlessness, irritability, panic attacks, nervous stomach and all-around general nervous tension. Research has also found that it helps reduce anxiety and depression and is a helpful pain reliever.

The scent of lavender stimulates brain pathways, including our limbic system, which is connected to our emotional responses and memories. You can try adding a few drops to an oil diffuser in your bedroom. Or massage your temples and back of your neck during times of stress. But make sure it’s 100 percent pure Lavandula Angustifolia, which is the soothing lavender, and not Lavandula Latifolia, the stimulating lavender.

Bergamot

The flavonoids found in bergamot oil are good for soothing the nerves and reducing tension, anxiety and stress. These properties also make them effective in treating sleeplessness, high blood pressure and depression. Bergamot oil can also stimulate the “feel-good” hormones in your body, such as dopamine and serotonin. Derived from the Citrus bergamia tree, bergamot oil has many other benefits, including pain relief and antibiotic properties.

Ylang-Ylang

Made from the flowers of the Cananga odorata tree, this essential oil sedates or calms nervous afflictions, stress, anger and anxiety, while inducing a relaxed feeling. Ylang-ylang (pronounced EE-lang EE-lang) has been shown to be effective in reducing blood pressure. As a remedy for depression, it is said to have the ability to “expand the heart.” Many depression sufferers have found that essential oils provide a natural and far safer alternative to drugs, and ylang-ylang may be one of the most useful of all the essential oils when it comes to improving your emotional well-being.

To relieve PMS cramps and other symptoms, try applying a mixture of ylang-ylang, lavender oil and a carrier oil, such as coconut oil, to the back of your neck and lower abdomen.

The Antidote to Fear

The Antidote to Fear

Whether you’re scared of change, success or failure… it’s worth remembering that fear is a universal experience.

The problem is that most people see fear as a sign of weakness.

Yet it’s a natural human response to pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone and trying something new (as well, of course, if your life is in danger and you’re being chased by a predator… even if you’re thinking of being chased by a predator).

There’s a belief that when you’re confident, fear will go away, However that isn’t the case.

It’s simply that your relationship with fear changes so you can handle it better.

Whenever I start a new project, teach a new group, or even sometimes when I’m seeing a new client for the first time, fear raises its head.

My fear says things like ‘Be careful… don’t go putting yourself out there! What if people don’t like what you have to say?’ or ‘Be careful… what if you can’t help this person? Maybe you’ll fail this time…’.

I tell my fear ‘Not Now!’ and return my focus back to my task.

If you’re feeling fear while you’re taking the action, use it to your advantage.

Fear can actually heighten performance as you’re more alert and focused – provided you claim power over your thoughts and drive the energy to where you need it most (not to running away and hiding from what scares you).

The antidote to fear is to see it for what it is, to recognise and acknowledge it – and move on in spite of it.

Because if you don’t take action, your fear increases and keeps you even more stuck.

So, if there’s something you want to do that you’re being held back by from fear, know that the fear will subside once you’ve taken action.

What gives fear power is you listening to it for so long!

If you would like to discuss your power to work with your fear, we have some amazing talk therapists here at the centre.

Hypnotherapy and Psychotherapy for our talk therapies More

Meditation, Mindfulness and Yoga for our relaxation therapies MORE

And well we are just here to help you be the best that you can be, so you can just pop in and have achat and we can find the right approach for you.

What Is Holistic Health?

Holistic Health is an approach to life. Rather than focusing on illness or specific parts of the body, this ancient approach to well-being considers the whole person and how he or she, via their life-style, interacts with their environment. Holistic Health emphasizes the connection of mind, body, and spirit in harmony with one another.  At River Holistic Centre, you will hear us talk about holistic Health as an ongoing process – as a lifestyle, consisting of a personal commitment from you to be in continuous movement toward the “best end” of the wellness continuum.  This is the ethos which guides us here at River Holistic Centre, an oasis in one of Dublin’s oldest villages in its own harmony with the ebb and flow of commuter land.

Welcome to your Holistic Home……..

New Hatha Yoga Class.

We are very excited to now be offering Hatha Yoga at the Centre.  This new class will be starting on the Monday the 27th of April and it may be just what you were looking for.

Hatha yoga refers to the joining and harmonising of the two main energies within us- the masculine or sun energy and the feminine or moon energy.  It is essential to understand and flow with these energies as we find a balance between doing (masculine) and allowing or receiving (feminine). Within this class we will draw upon the practice of asana (postures), pranayama (breath work) and shavasana (deep relaxation), whilst accessing the subtle energies of the chakra system.

This Hatha yoga class will focus on increasing flexibility and strength, whilst enabling the body to soften, open and relax.  The word yoga itself refers to the oneness or union of our being, and the practice in this class will focus upon creating a greater sense of harmony between the physical body, the emotions, thoughts and energetic layers of our being.

As we move through asana (postures) we invoke the power of the breath and activate the chakras to enable us to grow and evolve in our daily life, learning tools and techniques to bring us back into a deeper place of balance, both on and off the mat.

This class is appropriate for complete beginners to more advanced students, as modifications will be incorporated to enable each student to practice at their own unique level.

Places will be limited to 8 people, and must be pre-booked / pre-paid with either a deposit or full payment.

New 4 class term: Monday from 6 – 7.15pm (75 minutes) on the 24th of April, 8th, 15th & 22nd of May- 4 weeks (no class May 1st).

4 class term costs €55, or drop in classes are €16 (space dependent).
