Chair Yoga Class

The yoga chair has always been a useful friend and great teacher of Iyengar yoga. It allows us to explore our body better, get better extension and support to the spine, get deeper into twists, longer and easier into inversions and so on.

Chair Yoga class will be dedicated to learning how to use the yoga chair to improve our understanding and practice in different groups of yoga postures (standing poses, forward bends, back bends, inversions, twists etc.).

As always, we will also learn and practice Pranayama on the chair.

Our class provide a chance to practice yoga on a deeper level in a holistic way, connecting the physical and the organic body through yoga Asanas, each time with a different theme or subject matter. In addition we take the time to touch upon breathing or meditation techniques and inquire into different philosophical aspects of yoga that are at the heart of our practice.

Yoga asanas involve extension, exertion, as well as relaxation of the body. The aim of the movement is to align the body correctly. For a yogi, the yoga asanas described below are the foundation of every yoga practice. The objective of a beginner yogi is to understand proper alignment. Whereas a seasoned yogi strives to find greater depths and sustain the asanas for an extended length of time. Whether you are a beginner yogi or an advanced practitioner, adding a yoga prop will help to stretch, strengthen, relax and improve the alignment of the body, enhancing the experience of the entire yoga practice.

My practice has personally benefited immensely from using props. To recover from a cervical spine injury, I began experimenting with ordinary and everyday objects such as walls, chairs, cushions and blankets. Props have been a core element of several restorative yoga practices over the years. In fact, the chair has been an important characteristic of Iyengar Yoga for decades. The easy availability of chairs made it an integral part of my practice. I was able to do more with the help of a chair, accessing key movements and achieving more height, balance and stability. I could stay longer and relax in challenging asanas, thus attaining their maximum benefit.

Try these foundational yoga poses using a chair. As a silent instructor, it will help you enhance the understanding of each asana. Important thing to note: the chair should be stable, without wheels and without hand rest and make sure your come out of the pose just like you go in.

Yoga has been shown to improve overall health when practiced regularly. As with many forms of exercise, it can be modified for people of varying abilities. Chair yoga is a gentle form of yoga that can be done sitting on a chair or standing on the ground while using the chair for support. It is beneficial for people with limited mobility and for those who want to practice yoga at their workplace. The benefits of practicing these chair yoga poses (called asanas) include:
Improved flexibility. Flexibility allows us to do the activities we need and love to do, from twisting while driving to bending over to play with children.
Better concentration. Incorporating breath work with the poses can help clear your brain of unwanted thoughts, improve mood and decrease stress.
Increased strength. Body strength enables us to withstand falls and injury and helps us with balance.
Reduced joint strain. Chair yoga reduces the strain on joints and muscles, which allows someone who is unable to stand for traditional yoga an opportunity to practice too.
Portability and convenience. You can do chair yoga nearly anywhere you can find a place to sit 💛

Three more places available for the upcomingFemale Sexual Empowerment Workshop

for the 16thSeptember 2018.

Drawing on the latest scientific research on female sexuality, this discussion-based workshop will explore the interaction between a woman’s physical, emotional, mental and spiritual self in the context of sexuality.

The workshop is intended for women exclusively, in order to provide a safe haven for a discussion and exploration of topics relevant for women’s sexual well-being.

It will inform women about the latest findings in the field of female sexuality, and provide them with a range of fantastic resources (and ideas!) that could help them increase their sexual satisfaction.

The goal is to empower women to strengthen their self-care and bodily awareness, develop and maintain a loving relationship with themselves, and therefore build balanced, healthy and joyful relationships with others.

This workshop will provide an open, safe and supportive environment to explore the following issues relevant for women’s sexual happiness:

 Female genital landscape (Am I normal? Yes.)

 Arousal (Why don’t I get turned on when I want to? Why do I get turned on by things that don’t even appeal to me?)

 Desire (What if I sometimes experience low sexual desire for my partner? What could we do about it?)

 Self-pleasure (What is it that I do? What else could I do?)

 Orgasm (What makes me come? What else could make me come?)

 Body image (What if I sometimes struggle with the way I perceive my body? How could I develop a loving relationship with my body?)

About Tina Bedenik has a PhD from University College Dublin (UCD) where she researched gender, body image and sexuality. Her study of women’s experiences of labiaplasty was awarded with the Irish Research Council Government of Ireland Scholarship. She also taught undergraduate and postgraduate modules at UCD, including those on gender, sexuality and reproductive health. Prior to coming to Ireland she studied for multiple degrees in Sweden, Norway, England, Germany and Croatia. She currently works as a registered complementary

A Mindful Journey of Self Awareness

The journey comprises of Hypno-Meditations to increase awareness and facilitate the process of unfolding the ‘Self’. Why athletes should include massage into their fitness regimen

Why add massage into your fitness training regimen.

The overexertion of muscles through rigorous physical training and exercise can affect athletes’ performance and increase their risk for injury. In between those strenuous workouts, the body could use some pampering.

Regular massage supports the relaxation and recovery process after workouts, helping to prevent injuries; reduce swelling, muscle stiffness and fatigue; and achieve peak performance. And there are numerous other potential benefits that are conducive to your overall health and well-being.

Massage therapy helps improve muscle flexibility (which helps prevent injuries like muscle pulls and tears) and shorten recovery time as well as relieve muscle tension and pain, a remedy for common issues like delayed-onset muscle soreness.

But massage can benefit more than muscles, some research suggests that massage may also help:

  • Lower anxiety
  • Increase range of motion
  • Improve your mood
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Enhance blood flow and alertness

Massage is good for the body either before, during or after athletic events. Sports massage incorporates Swedish (for improved circulation) and deep tissue techniques, among others. Athletes, or anyone who does strenuous exercises on a regular basis, should speak with a massage therapist about specific needs and concerns in order to determine how often massages are necessary and which techniques are most appropriate.

Your injury or needs will determine the focus of the therapy.  Often times, an athlete has a specific area in which they are experiencing pain, limited range of motion, etc. That area, in addition to the supporting muscles and connective tissue, is addressed.

A full body massage at another time, maybe within a week or two, is also very helpful for the whole body compensates for an injury, and an injury heals more quickly when the rest of the body is free of limitations.

 

Setting goals for your future

You probably have a good idea of how you would like your life to run and imagine it could only be a dream – but by setting a few goals it doesn’t have to be.

Setting goals is harder than it sounds. There are so many areas of your life where you could start: your job, family, relationships, health and fitness, and further education. Everyone has dreams and attempting to realise them can be incredibly stressful.  Sometimes the pressure to succeed can build a brick wall that prevents you from getting where you want to go.

Changing the way you think about goals can affect the end result.  It is much better to say to yourself “I will execute this task well” than “I must not make that mistake again”.  Positive thinking can make setting a goal easier than berating yourself with negative thoughts.

Personal planning:

Write down your goals as short, concise sentences.  This will focus your mind and help you gain knowledge about them.  You decide what it is you want to achieve and construct a step-by-step plan on how to get there.

Don’t be discouraged if you can’t turn everything around at once.  Start by setting small targets and you’ll be surprised how much of a difference they will make.

Looking ahead

What kind of goals do you want to set?  You may find that you have some lifetime ambitions like taking early retirement or starting a family; or more short-term goals like taking a course that will enhance your personal development.  Breaking your ideas down in this way will help clarify your needs and enable you to structure the plans you have.

Define your ambition

If you are finding it difficult to make a decision about where to start, begin with writing a goal down on paper and then list the benefits and advantages of achieving that goal.  Once you have about 25 or more items on your list, you are half way towards defining the meaning and value of your dreams.  Everyone thinks of things they would like to do, but they rarely take the time to list the advantages in this way.  Doing so will make the goal seem worthier to you.

Stay Grounded

When you come to set your goals be sure that they are realistic.  There is nothing wrong with being ambitious but take care not to overstretch yourself, because, equally, there is nothing more disheartening than failing to reach a goal.  Be specific and make sure that your goals are your own. You need to ask yourself honestly whether they are your dreams or have you been influenced by your family, friends, the media or society, no matter how well-meaning such advice might be.  Do what is right for you and believe in the choices you have made.

Take the challenge

On the other hand, it is important not to set your goals too low.  A bit of a challenge in your life is a good thing.  It can be easy to take the simpler route as the fear and failure can loom heavy in your mind.  Setting goals that you are guaranteed to reach will dispel your fears, but where is the achievement in that?

See your goals

Visualise a clear mental image of the end result of your goal and keep it in the forefront of your mind.  Play it over and over again until it is sharply focused.  If you want to get that promotion, start your own business, loose a bit of weight, just imagine yourself sitting at that desk, being successful in your new career, create a mood board, fitting into those favourite jeans you haven’t worn in years.  Many people find visual stimulus more motivating than writing lists, so this technique will help keep you motivated.

Positive thinking

Stay positive, keep on track and keep moving forward, no matter what setbacks you might come across.  Having a positive attitude in the face of whatever life throws at you is the key to your success.

Some people still believe massage therapy is an indulgence purely for relaxation. The health benefits of massage, however, have proven otherwise.

Today we know that our mind-body connection means excessive stress brings on or exacerbates illness by reducing our own natural immunity to disease. People who value their health know that, like a healthy diet and exercise, regular massage treatments are a valuable part of a stress-reduction plan.

Anxiety, depression and other mental health conditions can be better managed with massage therapy, according an article on the Mayo Clinic website (mayoclinic.org). In addition, massage helps reduce or alleviate headaches, joint pain, digestive disorders, fibromyalgia and much more.

Massage therapy has many forms, applied according to a therapist’s training and a client’s ailments. Some commonly known techniques are Swedish, hot stone, deep tissue, prenatal, and sports massage.

Holistic massage is a combination of various movements used to manipulate muscles through the application of pressure to either soothe or stimulate the whole body. It aims to balance the “whole” person and the effects will vary with each individual.

This therapy helps in the relief of a wide range of problems physiologically and psychologically, they include:

It’s okay you got this

Going through fertility treatment can be a challenging experience both physically and emotionally. All matter of scenarios might be running through your head, with so many questions, what ifs and more. You might be researching the topic or constantly wanting to think about it.

Some days you may feel completely overwhelmed with the process, so it is important to put some strategies in place early, to help you cope during these times.

 

#1 Be kind to yourself

Fertility treatment can be an emotional rollercoaster; it is normal to find you cope well some days and others your emotions are a little overwhelming. On those tougher days, consider taking time out for yourself to engage in whatever self-care works best for you – it may be having a good cry, time alone, time with friends or family, doing something you enjoy.

 

#2 Develop and maintain good self-care practices

Make these part of your daily or weekly routine and use them regularly; prioritise these to assist with your well-being. Self-care is very personal but could include things such as reading, music, exercise, time with family or friends, soak in a bath, fresh flowers, meditation, engaging with spirituality etc.

#3 Focus on the things that you can control

By doing this you can be proactive and channel your energy into things you have the ability to influence which many people find empowering. Things you can control include diet, exercise, sleep, self-care etc. but be balanced in this and don’t be too restrictive.

#4 Consider limiting the amount of time spent focussing on infertility

You could set a daily time limit (e.g. 30 minutes) or a specific number of times per week. During this time give yourself permission to think about, talk about, research infertility and treatment as much as you like, but once the time is over try to set it aside until the same time the next day/occasion. Although difficult, it is important not to let fertility treatment consume you.

 #5 Try to live in the moment

It is easy for your mind to wander too far ahead worrying about all the what ifs. Try to deal with each moment or difficulty as it arises. Mindfulness can be very helpful in allowing us to stay more in the present moment.

#6 Keep the lines of communication open

It is important to talk with others, particularly your partner about your thoughts and feelings.

 #7 Prioritise reconnecting with your partner and rejuvenating your relationship

Fertility treatment can take a toll on your relationship. Try to do things that help to put the fun and spontaneity back into your relationship. Reconnect with all the things about each other that drew you together in the first place.

#8 Consider keeping a gratitude journal

Noting down three things a day that you are grateful/thankful for. These could be related to fertility or could be completely separate. Even in tough times, if we look hard enough there are often other little things in our life that give us hope and lead us to feel thankful.

 #9 Ask for help if needed

If your feelings seem to be increasing in intensity or lasting more than a few days please seek professional support through your specialist.

Not just an extra pair of hands

More than just an extra pair of hands

When I was a kid, the role of the father was always that of the bread-winner, the person who you saw late at night or on the weekends and sometimes the threat that our mothers always used; “wait till your father gets home”. This was just how it was. As I have grown older and have had children myself, I see it was much more than this.
Our fathers taught us the importance of a strong work ethic, responsibility, compassion and respect. Considering that their fathers possibly had even less interaction with them, these things are invaluable.

My relationship with my father has never been stronger than it is today. He is someone I can go to for advice on my business, a pillar of strength if I need help emotionally and an amazing grandfather to my two boys. He is continuing to teach my boys all of these vital tools while enjoying not having to be the bad cop anymore, just the jelly bean supplier.

My father taught me that I am worth respect and kindness, that I can do anything I put my mind to and if doesn’t work out at least I tried.

If mothers are the heroes of child rearing, significance of a father in the development and emotional well-being of a child is no less. But over the decades, a lot has changed. It is often said that daughters are closer to their father because they are the first ideal man in their life. On the other hand, for sons, father is an idol and the strongest man they aspire to emulate.

With the growth of nuclear families and both parents working, fathers do not shy away from taking care of their children. From changing nappies to putting their children to sleep, no task is difficult for modern-day fathers. This cultural change is helping in strengthening father-child relationship and consequently in emotional development of a child and building of stronger family bonds.

Often, contribution of a father in their children’s lives is overshadowed by that of the mothers. They are not given the due credits for their participation in the development and upbringing of their children. Fathers are equally important like mothers and play a significant role.

So, to the fathers in our lives, I personally want to thank you for not just being another set of hands. But standing side by side with your partners and showing our future generation that a man can be strong, caring, nurturing, approachable and an invaluable role model.

The Lightness of Being

An Introductory Workshop

The most essential aspect of our nature is the part of us rarely accessed due to the busyness of our mind and our thoughts; our very Being.

In this workshop you’ll be introduced to an exercise of connection leading to the direct experience of Being and the depths of peace and relaxation residing there. Each person will be invited to name how and what they experience as a result of making this connection and to know that it is ever present, no matter what is happening in the outer aspects of life.

The second part of the workshop will introduce exercises and practices promoting and assisting living more and more in the quality of Being and less in the busy mind which always experiences life as problematic.

Aine has practiced as a Psychotherapist and Craniosacral Therapist since 1992 and 1994 respectively. As a result of her experiences she saw how the deepest most essential part of the person has always resided peacefully and has never been affected by difficulties or traumas experienced along the way. To restore a sense of wellbeing she sees that this relationship, at our very core and always stable, is the key to living fully alive, and reducing any sense of contraction, fear or anxiety held in the body/mind system.

It’ time to look after yourself

One of my favorite parts of New Years is throwing away the old calendar and getting to start anew. All the hopes, dreams, and fantasies of a new life seem so tangible at New Years, don’t they?

Well, have I got news for you.

According to a survey by Reuters only a measly 3% of people actually follow through with their big New Year’s resolutions. And psychologists believe that this failure to follow through on bold and brilliant New Year’s resolutions by 97% of us can actually lead to diminished self esteem and lack of motivation in the months to come.

Does this mean that the remaining 97% of us who threw ideas in the till for positive change are all losers who cannot commit to anything? Absolutely not! 

One of the reasons I ceased making resolutions is quite simply because I don’t believe that there is one specific day so enlightened that you can change your entire world in the blink of an eye. I don’t believe that putting all your eggs in the New Year’s basket is necessarily the best way to make changes in your life. Truth is, you can blow in the winds of change any day of week, any month of the year, any hour of the day – if you so choose.

I DO believe that New Years should be a time of reflection. What was the last year like for me? What are the things I did right? What are the things I did wrong? Where is there room for improvement and positive change? What are some of the things I would like to continue to do? What am I proud of, and what do I wish I could change? Am I living the best life possible, and if not – what are three simple changes I could make to head in that direction?

To me, the New Year is about taking inventory and making a plan. Not just a firm resolution which you are certain to break; that you will never again sink your teeth into a sugary donut, or guzzle down an ice-cold Coca Cola on a hot summer day – but a plan that you will eat two less donuts per week, and only enjoy one soda every other day.

Why set yourself up to fail? The last thing you want to do is to feel like a deflated balloon.

Instead, start slowly by asking yourself the questions above. Write down your answers and take baby steps toward achieving your goals. The expression “Rome wasn’t built in a day,” rings true when it comes to the beginning of the New Year – and nothing in your life should be all or nothing. If it is, chances are you are setting yourself up to feel guilty or bad down the road.

So in light of this we are sharing everything we have on offer for you at the centre, we have drop in classes if you feel like you can’t commit to one of our full time classes and we have weekend workshops that I am sure you will find is calling out to you.
