Natural ways to treat head lice

Tis the season to see these oh so common bugs in our little darlings hair.
With the schools now open for business this is the busiest time for there pesky pests.
It can be so hard to get rid of them once they have made your little ones head its home.
Below you are going to find different options that can work with curbing the itch and constant battle to rid them from your home.
I would always recommend as a prevention to work with the other parents of the children in your child’s class.
What I do for both my sons classes is to ask all the parents to use a fine tooth comb every Sunday without fail, it only takes about 10-20 min depending on hair length. If everyone were to do this you can honestly stop the constant letters coming home in your child’s schoolbag.
I also add about 15 drops tea tree oil to all of our shampoo’s to help with prevention.

Luckily, these natural remedy treatment can help eliminate even the most stubborn lice:

1. Almond Oil or Olive Oil

Both almond oil and olive oil are effective home remedies for lice, as they work to smother or suffocate lice, slowing them down to make them easier to remove with a comb. Coat the hair with oil after separating the hair into several small sections, keeping them separate with clips. Work under good lighting so you can see clearly, and be sure to frequently rinse the comb with hot running water. After combing through the hair, shampoo and rinse twice, then thoroughly clean the towel and comb. Use this remedy every day for one week.

2. Essential Oils

Several essential oils have been proven to help eliminate lice with the help of combing, including nutmeg, peppermint, red thyme, cinnamon, eucalyptus, clove, neem and lavender. Always check for allergies before using a new essential oil. Add between 3 and 10 drops of essential oil to 2 oz of olive oil, then let it sit on the scalp overnight, for a minimum of 12 hours. Comb everything out then shampoo twice.

3. Neem Oil

Neem oil is a natural insecticide. It can help get rid of lice safely and effectively. Buy a shampoo that contains neem oil, or add several teaspoons of neem oil to your own shampoo, and use it regularly.

4. Garlic and Lime Juice (very smelly, but very effective)

Garlic’s strong fragrance can suffocate lice. Make a paste by grinding 8-10 garlic cloves and mixing them with 2-3 teaspoons of lime juice. Apply the mixture to the scalp and let it sit for 30 minutes before thoroughly rinsing it with warm water.

5. Mayonnaise or Coconut Oil

Use mayonnaise or coconut oil to saturate the scalp and hair, then cover the head with a shower cap for 12-24 hours. Heat the shower cap, then shampoo the hair without getting it wet. Cover scalp again for 30 minutes to allow the oil to break down, then thoroughly rinse the hair and comb through it. Go through the hair section by section with the comb, and be sure to rinse it regularly with hot water. Shampoo hair with no water once more, and wear a shower cap overnight to prevent lice from returning.

6. Nit Comb

For children under two years old, comb wet hair using a fine-toothed nit comb. For best results, comb while the hair is wet and contains conditioner. Comb out the hair two times each session for 3-4 days.

8. Treat the Home

To help prevent a re-infestation, try these steps:
Wash their coats as the hoods and collars will always have eggs left.
Wash brushes and combs daily in hot water to dislodge lice.
Seal items that are non-washable and touched the head, in a plastic bag for 2 weeks.
Change towels, pajamas, sheets and pillowcases daily.
Vacuum the part of a child’s car seat cover that touches the child’s head daily.

Healing with Fennel

Cleansing with Fennel

Fennel has a strong and distinctive smell that can help to suppress your appetite and ease digestive disorders.
Warming and stimulating fennel has a long tradition as a digestive tonic. The seeds of the herb are crushed to give a strongly scented, sweet, peppery oil. Fennel has potent properties. Used sparily, it has an enlivening, energising and revitalising effect on the mind and body.
Fennel’s main action is on the digestion, where it has a regulating and ‘unblocking’ action. It is effective in relieving nausea, indigestion, constipation and flatulence.

Fennel for your Detox regime:
Use fennel to detoxify your body as it acts as a tonic for the kidneys, liver and spleen. It is also a diuretic, promoting the flow of urine and helping to reduce fluid retention in tissues – as such it is especially useful before menstruation. Fennel also regulates periods and stimulates the flow of breast milk in nursing mothers.

Circulation Stimulant:
Stimulate sluggish circulation with fennel to gain relief from the building up of toxins and fluids.
Ease swollen feet:
Cypress acts as a tonic to the circulatory system, complimenting fennel’s ‘movin’ action. Ease puffy, swollen feet and ankles with a massage blend of:
• 5 drops fennel
• 5 drops cypress
• 20ml of grapeseed oil
Relieve painful gout:
Treat gout by gently massaging the affected are with:
• 3 drops fennel
• 6 drops juniper
• 6 drops lemon
• 25mls of grapeseed
this blend stimulate circulation and helps to clear away accumulated toxins.

Detoxifying Fennel:
Make use of fennel’s diurectic action to clean your urinary system.
Water Rentention:
Relieve symptoms of bloatedness due to water retention by massaging the abdomen and lower back with a blend of:
• 3 drops fennel
• 5 drops juniper
• 10 drops lemon
• 2 drops peppermint
• 25mls of sweet almond.
A massage blend of the following oils aids lymphatic drainage of the tissues.
• 3 drops of clary sage
• 6 drops of fennel
• 2 drops of geranium
• 2 drops of rosemary
• 25mls of grapeseed.
Diurectic Bath:
Aid your body’s ability to detox by adding to your bath water:
• 2 drops of fennel
• 3 drops of lemon
• 3 drops of juniper
Digestive Aid:
Tone, soothe and regulate the body’s digestive processes with fennel.
Ease Gut Cramps:
For relief from digestive cramps, make a warm compress by soaking a flannel in a bowl of water containing:
• 3 drops fennel
• 1 drop peppermint
• 6 drops rosemary
Apply across abdomen and use a hot water bottle to retain heat.

Soothe Indigestion:
Relieve indigestion with a chest and back massage blend containing:
• 3 drops fennel
• 5 drops orange
• 3 drops sage
• 25ml grapeseed
All three of these essential oils work to calm and balance the digestion- but don’t massage immediately after eating as the massage itself can disrupt digestion.

Oestrogen substitute:
Fennel is a natural source of a plant hormone that mimics the female hormone oestrogen.
Regulate Periods:
To treat irregular periods, apply a compress containing the following oils added to a bowl of water to the abdomen.
• 2 drops basil
• 2 drops fennel
• 2 drops Melissa
As a general tonic for the female reproductive system, massage the stomach and back with
• 4 drops cypress
• 4 drops of clary sage
• 2 drops fennel
• 30ml of sweet almond
Nursing Mothers:
Promote the flow of breast milk by massaging the breasts with:
• 5 drops of fennel
• 30ml of sweet almond.
• BE SURE TO REMOVE OIL BEFORE FEEDING.

Essential Oils for Hair Loss

Treating Hair Loss with Essential Oils

A recent study has revealed that Aromatherapy with essential oils can help in the treatment of hair loss, alopecia and bald spots due to hormonal issues.

Massaging in certain essential oils along with carrier oils like jojoba or grapeseed daily for 7 months showed a significant improvements.

Here is the list of essential oils that can help:

Thyme Oil:

Often added to hair care products, thyme oil is known to rejuvenate hair follicles and thus prevents hair loss.

It is also used as an excellent skin Softener

Rosemary Oil

Rosemary essential oil is on the best oils for improving hair growth.  This oil increases cellular metabolism that stimulates hair growth thereby aiding in the treatment of baldness.

Lavender Oil

When lavender oil is massaged on the scalp it improves blood circulation and thus promotes hair growth and prevents hair loss.  Moreover it also moisturizes the scalp and balances sebum.

Cedarwood Oil

Cedarwood stimulates the hair follicles by increasing circulation to the scalp when massaged everyday into the scalp.

After the birth of both of my sons, I lost a lot of my hair resulting in bald patches at the front and back of my scalp.  I used this blend in a grapeseed carrier oil and within about 7 months my hair was so much more healthier and thicker.  My scalp was flake free and a lot calmer.

How To:

  1. Add 20ml of Grapeseed into a plastic BPA Free bottle then add 3 drops of each of the above oils.
  2. Massage into scalp for at least 5 min every evening if possible, or at least twice a week.  It is easier to do it in the evening time so yo can leave it in over night.
  3. To remove, just add your shampoo ideally a sensitive scalp brand, to dry hair and massage in to break down the oils in your hair, then wash as normal.  It may take two washes to remove all oils but do try not to over wash your hair, as this may result in further damage.

Peppermint oil has been used as a tonic for centuries, and its fresh aroma is evident in toothpastes and mouthwashes today.

Peppermint is a powerful digestive stimulant; it aids the digestion of fats and strengthens liver function.  This makes it an excellent oil for relieving indigestion and treating gastric fevers and diarrhoea.

Decongestant properties

Peppermint stimulates the circulation, reviving aching muscles and joints.  It is also a powerful decongestant  and can be used to help with fevers and respiratory infections.  Additionally, it acts as a good deodorant.

Peppermint complements other decongestant oils, especially eucalyptus and thyme, which work to boost the body’s immune system.  Its aroma can also help to cool feelings of anger, hysteria or emotional burnout.

Focus your mind with Peppermint

Refreshing Peppermint oil invigorates the mind, acting as a nerve tonic and stimulant.

~ To sharpen concentration and alertness, simple combine 5 drops each of peppermint and basil oil with 10 drops of lemon in a room vaporizer.

~ To fight mental fatigue and emotional burnout with a stimulating whole body massage.  Add 50ml sweet almond oil to 4 drops each of peppermint and geranium and 10 drops rosemary.

~ Clear headaches with a soothing neck massage using peppermint and lavender oils.

Digestive Disorders

Use Peppermint’s digestive and antiseptic properties to help with common digestive disorders.

~ For relief from constipation, dilute 3 drops of peppermint, 5 drops lemon and 7 drops rosemary in 25ml  of grapeseed oil.  Massage gently over the abdomen in clockwise, circular movements every couple of hours.

~ Help with diarrhoea with an aromatic compress.  Mix 5 drops each of peppermint, ginger and marjoram in hot water.  Soak a facecloth in this, wring and apply to the abdomen.

Revive tired feet

Just what the doctor ordered after a long day on your feet.

~Relieve aching feet in an invigorating foot spa that contains 4 drops each of peppermint and geranium along with 3 tablespoons of Epsom Salts.

~Combine 3 drops each of peppermint, rosemary and lavender with 25ml of grapeseed oil for a invigorating foot massage.  Firm, brisk strokes will increase circulation.

~ Make your own antiseptic foot powder to treat athletes foot.  Simply add 5 drops lavender and 3 drops                                                                                         peppermint to 2 tablespoons or corn flower.

Cold and flu remedies

~ Add 2 drops each of peppermint, rosemary and lavender to boiling water.

Place towel over your head and inhale steam for 5 minutes.

~ Treat feverish colds by putting a few drops of peppermint, eucalyptus and pine in a room diffuser or oil burner.

The sun is definitely shining in River Holistic………..July is all about getting your chill on here at the Centre.  With the schools now closed for the summer you may be wondering what can you do for yourself once the little ones have gone off to camp during the mornings or when they have headed off to dreamland in the evening.

Well we may have the perfect classes and treatments for you.  Lets face it, the summer months can be a bit draining for all of us mams and dads, between working with taking time off, trying to keep the kids occupied and well not quite having your own space, let us help you with that.

We have the honour of welcoming some amazing new teachers to the River Room, their classes which include pregnancy yoga, pilates, yoga for sports, kundalini yoga, hatha yoga and Vinyasa yoga.

Bergamot your new BFF

Healing with Bergamot

Bergamot is valued for its uplifting aroma and stimulating properties.

Refreshing Bergamot oil is extracted from the almost ripe citrus fruit of the bergamot tree.  It’s fruity, citrus scent with delicate, woody undertones has made it a valued oil through the ages.

Bergamot is refreshingly uplifting and stimulating.  It acts on the central nervous system and is a good tonic for treating symptoms of stress, tension and anxiety.  It is invigorating but not over-stimulating, helping the mind to achieve balance.

Using Bergamot Oil

Holiday survival
  • Apply a few drops of bergamot and lavender oil to some lengths of ribbon or string.  Hang these on your balcony at night to keep the dreaded mosquitoes away while you sleep like a baby.
  • Ease travel sickness and feelings of nausea with a cold compress of bergamot.
Cleanse the skin

To eliminate pimples:

Dilute 2 drops of bergamot and 2 drops of thyme in a tablespoon of grapeseed oil.  Massage into the skin daily to clear the skin of blemishes.

A cooling body oil:

Add 5 drops each of bergamot and lemon, 3 drops of neroli and 1 drop of rosemary to 50ml of sweet almond oil and apply when needed.

For Oily Skin:

Mix 25mls of witch hazel, 75ml of distilled water and 15ml of glycerine.  Add 5 drops of bergamot,geranium and 3 drops of sandalwood.  This makes a beautiful soap for the face and the entire body.

Boost Concentration

This invigorating oil improves concentration by awakening the mind and promoting clearer thinking.  Keep it close when you need an extra boost.

  • Sail through that exam or interview with a fragrant and confidence-boosting blend of bergamot, lavender and grapefruit oil.  Apply a few drops onto a handkerchief and place were its handy.
  • Computer screens bombard the body with positive ions.  In the office, home, desk, restore the natural balance of your body’s energy with a refreshing room spray of negatively-charged bergamot.
  • Fight drivers Fatigue by adding a few drops of bergamot to a cotton ball and place near an air vent.
Mood Lifting

Use Bergamot’s invigorating properties to treat tiredness, anxiety and stress.

  • If you have trouble getting up in the mornings start the day with a refreshing and uplifting shower using the soap mix from above.  You will have a new spring in your step and smell like summer.  Win Win.
  • Soothe feelings of agitation and anxiety by using calming bergamot in a room vapouriser or oil burner.
  • To alleviate tension headaches, try a firm neck and shoulder massage by adding a few drops of bergamot and neroli to grapseed oil.

Experience the use of sound, blessing herbs and essential oils to cleanse, bless and enrich your environment – your outer skin.

Explore the importance of the “gap”, that sacred space between outbreath and in-breath, taking time to set your intention. This is the key, the central core of feng shui.

We will explore the use of essential oils in space clearing and to enhance the feng shui of your space. Aromatherapy for Insomnia

Aromatherapy for Insomnia and Difficulty Sleeping

Insomnia can impact our well being and the quality of our lives. The frustration of not being able to get a good night’s sleep can make the situation worse. Hectic lifestyles, stress, depression, physical illness and working unusual schedules can all be root causes for insomnia.
Aromatherapy cannot cure insomnia or its root cause, but using calming and relaxing essential oils before your intended bedtime can potentially help you fall asleep faster and stay asleep until your intended wake-up time. Of course, if you have an ongoing, serious sleep disorder, you should see your health professional to discuss your situation and gain treatment for the root cause of your insomnia.
If you suffer from occasional insomnia or sleep disturbances and want to try ideas that may help you fall asleep faster, consider the following tips:
Aromatic Cotton Ball by Bedside: Add a drop of Roman Chamomile Oil or Lavender Oil to a tissue or cotton ball and place that near your pillow at bedtime. Roman Chamomile Oil is considered a natural sedative. Another essential oil that possesses sedating properties is Clary Sage.
Bed Linen Spray: Create a calming bed linen spray and lightly spray your sheets before bedtime.
Bath time: Bathing is a wonderful way to relax, but avoid taking a bath immediately before bedtime. Hot water can increase your circulation and make it hard to fall asleep. Instead, plan to finish your bathing ritual about an hour before bed. While bathing, add a drop or two of Roman Chamomile or Lavender to your bathwater
The minerals in natural salts, especially Dead Sea salts, help to relax muscles which in turn can help you to relax overall.
Massage: Like bathing, massage is stimulating to your circulation and should generally be avoided immediately before bedtime. Prior to bedtime, however, try gently massaging your feet and legs with a calming massage oil or lotion.
Teatime: Borrowed from the field of herbalism, herbal teas using botanicals that have a natural sedative effect can be both soothing and relaxing before bedtime. Try natural chamomile tea. Teas made from passion flower and valerian are also considered to be very relaxing and help to encourage sleep, but do not have the familiar and pleasant flavour that chamomile tea offers.
Avoid Stimulating Essential Oils Before Bedtime: Some essential oils can be particularly energizing and stimulating (i.e. cypress, rosemary, grapefruit, lemon, peppermint). Avoid using these oils and products containing them before bed or they may make your insomnia worse.
The safest and most recommended course of action that you can take is to seek out the in-person guidance of a qualified Aromatherapist in your area. Your particular health situation and the root cause of your insomnia can make a difference in the most suitable recommendations for you. A qualified practitioner should conduct a case history on you and guide you based on your personal background and recommend blends suitable for you and discuss suitable dosages and methods of administration.

Other naturally based or simple ideas for helping ease sleeplessness include the following:
Exercise Regularly: Exercising right before bed isn’t a good idea, but establishing a regular exercise routine can help ease stress, eliminate toxins from your system, improve your overall health and help you to sleep better at bedtime. Of course, the disclaimer has to be mentioned that you should talk to your doctor before starting a new health or exercise program.
Avoid Eating Before Bedtime: Unless you have diabetes or a health issue that may require you to eat right before bedtime, avoid doing so. Carbohydrates, spicy foods and foodstuffs with caffeine are especially prone to making it hard to fall asleep easily.
Avoid Stressful Activities and Situations Before Bedtime: Whenever possible, spend the last hour before bedtime unwinding and doing something that you find relaxing. If scary movies or TV shows gets your adrenaline racing, consider watching comedies instead. Right before bed also isn’t the ideal time to finally work on your finances or call that relative who always upsets you.
Tuning Out Noise: If a root cause of your insomnia is due to noise or distractions, try masking the noise by playing soothing music, using a natural noise machine (the kind that plays soothing natural sounds such as ocean waves or rain) or using ear plugs. These ideas should only be tried if you are in a sleeping situation in which you don’t have to worry about masking out all noises.
Tuning Out Light: If lights make it hard for you to fall asleep or stay asleep, make sure that your window treatments mask out all light, especially if your schedule requires you to sleep at times when it is light out. Eye masks are also available that filter out light. Some work better than others, so try them on first to ensure a good fit.
