Your Health is your Wealth

Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, not merely the absence of disease or infirmity, according to World Health Organization (WHO). Indeed, health is wealth. Every now and then, it is important to remind ourselves that we need to take good care of ourselves. There is a reason to stay healthy. Being healthy can decrease developing medical conditions.

As the WHO defines health, remaining healthy means a holistic well-being. Caring for our minds is as important and crucial as caring for our bodies. One cannot be healthy without the other.

For this 2018, let us love ourselves more by considering these tips:

  • Visit your GP, eye doctor and dentist for regular check-ups
  • Be faithful in taking your medicines and also drink vitamins
  • Protect your skin especially from the sun
  • Exercise regularly
  • Eat healthy
  • Drink more water and fewer sugary drinks
  • Get enough sleep
  • Practice safe sex
  • Don’t smoke, limit alcohol intake and avoid drugs
  • Wash your hands – viruses are spread through contact
  • Practice self-care (no need to feel guilty)
  • Love yourself more and others too
  • Be friendly and be kind
  • Listen to others
  • Talk and share your feelings
  • Say “I love you,” “Thank you,” “Please” more often
  • Have fun – relax and rest
  • Call a friend
  • Learn something a new
  • Balance your time between work and play
  • Count your blessings and be grateful
  • Ask for help when needed

It’ time to look after yourself

One of my favorite parts of New Years is throwing away the old calendar and getting to start anew. All the hopes, dreams, and fantasies of a new life seem so tangible at New Years, don’t they?

Well, have I got news for you.

According to a survey by Reuters only a measly 3% of people actually follow through with their big New Year’s resolutions. And psychologists believe that this failure to follow through on bold and brilliant New Year’s resolutions by 97% of us can actually lead to diminished self esteem and lack of motivation in the months to come.

Does this mean that the remaining 97% of us who threw ideas in the till for positive change are all losers who cannot commit to anything? Absolutely not!

One of the reasons I ceased making resolutions is quite simply because I don’t believe that there is one specific day so enlightened that you can change your entire world in the blink of an eye. I don’t believe that putting all your eggs in the New Year’s basket is necessarily the best way to make changes in your life. Truth is, you can blow in the winds of change any day of week, any month of the year, any hour of the day – if you so choose.

I DO believe that New Years should be a time of reflection. What was the last year like for me? What are the things I did right? What are the things I did wrong? Where is there room for improvement and positive change? What are some of the things I would like to continue to do? What am I proud of, and what do I wish I could change? Am I living the best life possible, and if not – what are three simple changes I could make to head in that direction?

To me, the New Year is about taking inventory and making a plan. Not just a firm resolution which you are certain to break; that you will never again sink your teeth into a sugary donut, or guzzle down an ice-cold Coca Cola on a hot summer day – but a plan that you will eat two less donuts per week, and only enjoy one soda every other day.

Why set yourself up to fail? The last thing you want to do is to feel like a deflated balloon.

Instead, start slowly by asking yourself the questions above. Write down your answers and take baby steps toward achieving your goals. The expression “Rome wasn’t built in a day,” rings true when it comes to the beginning of the New Year – and nothing in your life should be all or nothing. If it is, chances are you are setting yourself up to feel guilty or bad down the road.

So in light of this we are sharing everything we have on offer for you at the centre, we have drop in classes if you feel like you can’t commit to one of our full time classes and we have weekend workshops that I am sure you will find is calling out to you.

The Benefits of Post Natal Yoga

Many women when pregnant attend a pregnancy yoga class: to keep toned, to stay flexible, to prepare their bodies for labour and birth, and also to meet other mums in their area. But once the baby is born it can be easy to lose the connection with other new mums, and feel disheartened about the physical and emotional effects childbirth can have on your body.

Postnatal yoga uses movement, balance and relaxation to allow your body to recover from pregnancy and birth. It helps to heal the body and mind, and repair all the tissues back to their former glory. It is designed for mums with their babies and so incorporates the little ones into the practice, either using yoga asanas to keep the babies entertained, or holding the babies as part of the yoga itself.

The class is designed to nurture new mums and provide a safe environment for them to heal and repair their bodies, to talk about their experiences of birth and as a new mum, and safely allow them to reconnect with their bodies – without their former passenger!

The Core Benefits of Postnatal Yoga

There are many benefits to attending a postnatal yoga class, in particular this type of yoga

  • restores hormonal balance
  • eases pressure on the nervous system
  • helps build up strength in the spine
  • minimises the effects of holding and feeding a baby
  • helps ease the effects of other heavy lifting (eg car seats)
  • Provides rest and instant relaxation
  • Helps reduce anxiety and depression
  • Restores the body towards full core strength.

The Physical Benefits of Postnatal Yoga

  • promotes general health
  • Complete exercise for the whole body
  • Movement that promotes stamina and strength
  • Realignment of the spine
  • Toning the deep abdominal muscles to ‘close the body’ after birth
  • Helps knits back together separated abdominal muscles
  • Relieves stiffness in the shoulders
  • Strengthens pelvic floor muscles
  • Strengthens abdominal and back muscles for core strength
  • Expands breathing
  • Promotes relaxation
  • Improves blood flow
  • Detoxification and movement of fluids
  • Promotes hormonal balance
  • Stimulate cell growth and repair
  • Maintains flexibility in the spine and joints

The Emotional Benefits of Postnatal Yoga

  • Continuity before and after birth
  • Reclaiming your body
  • Nurturing yourself
  • Renewing energy
  • Quietening the mind
  • Relaxation and deep rest
  • Relieves and avoids postnatal depression
  • Connects breathing with emotions
  • Aids bonding between mother and baby
  • Positivity
  • Interaction with other mums
  • Confidence in handling baby
  • Building trust and understanding
  • Providing support
  • Creating security for the baby
  • Healing emotionally after a difficult pregnancy or birth

Manifest the birth you deserve

Manifest The Birth You Deserve:

For my whole life, I have been practicing “The Law of Attraction”. Some might call this “The Secret” but when I am around it is no secret. I have spread this amazing information around and it has changed family and friend’s life for the better. It gave me and them some control over their outside life. Most people think that our family, relationships, home, career, happiness is something that we are given and we can’t change – (Sorry! We can’t change our family, but we can manifest how our relationship with them is!). The tools I learnt over the years have shaped my life as I know it and have shaped my future – which excited me! So it was a no-brainer that I would look at this more in depth when it comes to my passion – Midwifery and Birth.

A quick outline of the Law of Attraction and how it works:

The thoughts we put out into the universe shape our outside world.

  • Like attracts like.
  • Positivity brings positivity.
  • Thoughts become things.

That all sounds very nice and fluffy but how do we actually put it in to action?

The first step is to ASK:

When we ask the universe for a very clear thing, whether that might be the dream job, the dream man, or money in your bank account the law of attraction says ‘Ask and you shall receive’ and gives you exactly that that you put all your focus on. But here is the catch, in our everyday life we don’t ask for what we want, we usually talk and think about that which we don’t want. For example, ‘Oh god, I am so scared to give birth, I am going to be in a state, I am not going to be able for this, I need the epidural as soon as I get my first contraction’. And the universe says ‘Ask and you shall receive’.

We need to change our language but in particular our thoughts when it comes to birth. Focusing more on thoughts and phrases for example.

‘My body knows how to birth my baby’

‘I am a strong and confident woman, my body knows exactly what to do’

‘I feel completely in control of my amazing birth’

The second step is to BELIEVE:

The real magic from manifesting comes from this part. Belief! We need to believe with every cell in our amazing body that these affirmations and thoughts are true. When you say your affirmations at first you will think that you are going crazy. The more you say them and the more you feel the belief building in your energy that is when the power of the manifestation works.

Visualise yourself with all your mind and body having the most wonderful birth, something that you would of never imagined. Imagine yourself full of confidence during your labour and fully in control and what that feels like. My favourite visualisation to do is to visualise how you feel when it is all over and you have your wonderful healthy baby in your arms, and your supportive birthing partner with you. Fully immerse yourself in this blissful feeling of how well you did, and how amazing you are. Even go as far as visualising details of your baby like, their smells, and tiny fingers and toes!

The final step – the easiest one, is to RECEIVE:

Personally, my favourite!

What an amazing feeling when you receive your manifestations. It helps to look up videos on the Law of Attraction from amazing successful people like Oprah Winfrey that has used this tool with amazing benefit.

Allow yourself to receive all of the abundance and happiness you deserve!

You can do this!!

Lots of Love,

S

X

My own experience

I took my first yoga class at 18 years old during my leaving Cert year, and I will never forget how light I felt going home. I was hooked! I took classes casually for a few years but at 21 I suffered chronic whiplash from a car crash and took yoga more seriously as it was the only thing I was able to do and it gave me such release, physically and emotionally in my recovery. Now at 33 and having had a baby, I have experienced yoga in many different forms and have a different appreciation of it. I have used it as rehabilitation, to reduce anxiety, to meditate and to nurture my body through pregnancy and motherhood.

Teaching

I have an advanced ashtanga practice myself, something which I am looking forward to getting back to soon. I keep my classes on the smaller side as I wish to give a more individualised instruction approach to my teaching. I focus strongly on correct alignment and giving students the appropriate instruction for their needs. My classes in general are challenging but not beyond people’s level of ability. I focus strongly on the present which brings a strong meditative quality to my classes and enables my students to practice mindfulness.

As requested I have scheduled a class dedicated to athletes to sequence asanas targeting hips, legs and core. However this class is of course suitable for everyone.

My pregnancy yoga class is dedicated to those amazing woman undertaking this powerful journey. This class will not just ease away those aches and pains, but will prepare your body for delivery. This class will also nurture you emotionally to prepare you for the type of delivery you will have and empower you to make informed choices. You will meet other Mums in the area which can be a great support not just now, but post partum.

My post natal yoga is to again nurture the body after delivery. In particular this class will focus on rehabilitating the pelvic floor. The body is an amazing thing and has been through so much. During pregnancy and delivery, the weight of your growing baby has put a lot of pressure on the pelvic floor as well as some organs. Hormones have further relaxed ligaments and muscles in this area. Not strengthening this area post natally can lead to serious problems now and down the road. This class will give you the opportunity to heal with the added bonus of being able to bring along your baby so no need to worry about feeding, changing etc., anything goes here 😉

Say hello to my little friend

What is TENS?

I have my lucky TENS, it was my best friend throughout the early stages of Labor with my first. For 24 hours we were closer than myself and my partner.  I still think he is a bit resentful of it.  I didn’t have time for my second boy (20min Thank you very much)

The reason why it is my lucky TENS is that:

  1. It helped me to get to 6cm at home before I got to the hospital,
  2. It was a great distraction pressing the boost button, probably a bit too much 🙂
  3. I had terrible back labour with my first, this I believe helped immensely with the pain.
  4. I had a happy healthy baby boy (I know the TENS didn’t do that, but i still love it.)
  5. I shared it with 13 other mammies and they too experienced the best friend feeling and happy healthy babies.

Here comes the science.

As you know the human body generates electrical pulses, and we use these pulses that are sent from the brain through the nerve system to move muscles (walk, speak, workout, right now your body is sending pulses to move your finger up and down).

Luckily pain signals and pleasure signals travel the same way (through our nerves). The unit imitates the pleasure pulses and directs them through the nerve system to block pain signals to the brain.

It’s also likely that various factors interact to make TENS work. TENS may help you to feel that you have control over your contractions, it may help you to feel less anxious, and it also may provide a distraction from your contractions.

When and how should I use TENS?

TENS seems to work best and give you the most effective pain relief if you start using it at the very beginning of your labour, so hire a TENS machine and use it at home before you go into hospital, if you’re having a hospital birth.

It takes about an hour for your body to respond to the electrical impulses by releasing endorphins, so start using it when you’re getting regular contractions or backache. You may find your machine works better at relieving your backache than abdominal pain.

Start with the controls at their lowest settings and turn them up gradually as your contractions or the back pain gets stronger. Use the boost button at the peak of contractions.

What are the advantages of TENS?

It’s portable and non-invasive.

It’s under your control.

It’s easy to use.

You can keep moving while using it.

You can use it for as long as you want and then take it off. There are no lasting side-effects.

It’s safe for your baby.

It doesn’t need an anaesthetist, doctor or midwife to administer, so you can start using it as soon as you want to.

It can be used for a home birth.

What are the disadvantages?

You will need someone to help you put the pads on.

It may only help in the early stages of labour.

It costs between €60 and €120 plus postage to hire for a month to six weeks.

It may have to be removed if your baby’s heart has to be monitored electronically .

If you want to use a birthing pool or have a bath, you can use TENS before you get in the water, but not when you are in the water.

It can makes it more difficult for your birth partner to massage your back, which can be an effective form of pain relief.

Any useful tips?

Don’t give up straight away if you think your TENS isn’t doing anything. You need to keep using it for at least an hour to give your body time to build up endorphin’s in response to the stimulation.

Keep mobile. Moving around during labour helps women feel more in control and should therefore enhance the effect of TENS.

If you don’t think it’s helping you, take it off and don’t feel bad. You’ve lost nothing (except your hire fee). All other forms of pain relief, both medical and non-medical, are still open to you.

New to the Clinic: Facial Reflexology

Facial Reflexology

Imagine that deeply calming and satisfying feeling that you get in your body after an intense workout, where your mind and cells hums with contentment. Now transfer that feeling to your face! The first benefit of Facial Reflexology (which includes deep tissue facial massage) is total relaxation. Facial reflexology can produce a natural Botox effect by relaxing facial muscles; it can tighten the skin by improving muscle tone; and it can give you a healthy radiant glow that makes you look as good as you feel, and feel as good as you look.

How does facial reflexology work?

You may have heard of foot or hand Reflexology. Facial Reflexology works on the same principles, but the treatment takes place on your face and head. This non-invasive treatment is based on the theory that areas on your face are connected to areas of your body, and stimulating them improves underlying energy imbalances which promotes wellbeing. The proximity of the face to the brain is key to the effectiveness of this original therapy.

feel good…and look good!

Facial Reflexology is not a beauty treatment. However, it does have rather lovely beautifying side effects, quite literally ‘lifting’ the face to make your face feel and look smoother and more toned. It also encourages lymphatic drainage, stimulates the facial nerves, increases blood flow and muscle tone, helps to build up new skin tissue and improves skin tone.

Facial Reflexology aims to help reduce the symptoms and effects of many common ailments including stress, IBS, back pain, arthritis, depression, MS, menstrual and hormonal ailments and sleep disorders. Facial reflexology treatments are very popular during pregnancy and are often used to help promote a shorter and natural labour.
